Outlast the Dark: The Story Behind the Sketch

Outlast the Dark: The Story Behind the Sketch

This is not a story I tell easily. But I tell it because someone needs to hear it today. Maybe that someone is you.

Ten years ago, I was diagnosed with severe clinical depression.

I'm not sure how long I lived with it before I finally addressed it, but it was at minimum a dark, silent year. I had become an expert at hiding. I knew exactly how to play the role the world expected. At work, at church, in public, I was the happy, jovial Jeremy everyone knew.

But at home, the facade crumbled. My wife saw through it all. I was irritable, melancholic, and apathetic. My brain was in a constant loop of lies, telling me I was a failure as a husband and a father. I believed every word. I truly believed my family would be better off if I weren't here.

It took my wife addressing the darkness head-on for me to admit there was an issue. Even then, I was hesitant.

She found a help line through her work and left the number for me one morning. Halfway through that day, I picked up the phone.

I believe the woman on the other end of that line helped save my life. Without access to that resource, I may not be here today.

Why This Design Exists

That is why the Outlast the Dark T-Shirt matters.

The matchbook sketch is a reminder that there are resources available. There are people who care. There are people who want you to outlast the dark.

This isn't just a design. It's a lifeline printed on cotton. It's the number on the matchbook — the one you might need to pick up today, or the one you might hand to someone else who does.

If You Are Struggling Right Now

Please know that you are needed here. Not when you're better. Not when the dark lifts. Right now.

The darkness lies. It tells you that you are a burden, that people would be better off, that there is no way through. None of that is true. None of it.

There are people on the other end of a phone line right now whose entire purpose is to sit with you in the dark and help you find your way through it. Please let them.

If you need help, dial 988. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also text HOME to 741741 to reach the Crisis Text Line.

You don't have to be in crisis to call. You just have to be struggling. That is enough.

Outlast the Dark

The Outlast the Dark Vintage Wash Drop Shoulder T-Shirt was designed to carry this story into the world. To be a conversation starter. To be the thing someone sees on your chest and thinks: maybe I'm not alone.

Wear it as a reminder that you made it through your darkest days. Wear it for the person next to you who is still in theirs. Wear it because the dark is real — and so is the light on the other side of it.

I picked up the phone. I'm still here. I'm grateful every single day.

You can outlast the dark. I promise.
